James Walter Estes was born in 1882 in Rex, Georgia. He earned a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1904. Estes and his father founded the Estes Manufacturing Company in 1907. Estes later became president of the Rex Chair Company. He was mayor of Rex, Georgia and served in the Georgia State Senate for two terms from 1938-1940; 1943-1946.
